Don't miss a night out on the town

and comes alive on Sunday nights when the residents of Cozumel
and their children (dressed in Sunday finery) congregate
in the town square between 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.
LA RUTA MAYA -
The Maya created a civilization that knew no equal.
Three thousand years ago, in the
fertile, sun-drenched lands of Mexico and Central America,
the Maya created a civilization
that knew no equal. They build magnificent cities, developed
extensive trade tours and fashioned ceremonial centers
that arched toward the heavens. Today the 1500-mile-long "Maya
Route" runs down the length of the Yucatan Peninsula,
crosses the jungles and mountains of Guatemala and loops
through verdant Belize. The often dreamlike terrain varies
from searing white beaches to impenetrable rain forest.
Chilling stone faces stare out of the jungle and rivers
disappear into seamy, darkening ells. Thousands of stone
dwellings,
vast plazas and - sacbes - Maya carved roads testify to
the
greatness of their cities. The intricacy of Maya sculptures
and stelae testify to their artistic genius.
Your Cozumel trip would not be complete without a visit
to one of these magnificent places. To insure their availability,
it is suggested that you reserve your tours upon arrival
at the front desk. There they will be happy to assist you
in making your arrangements.
COBA
- TULUM
Coba is an enormous archeological zone with clusters of ceremonial centers
built on the shores of five lakes. Coba is the most mysterious Maya site in
the Yucatan. The towering pyramids, soaring above the rain forest, are the
most majestic in Mexico. Jungle walking paths - sacbes - connect each center.
The tour is guided beginning with a ferry trip to the mainland, then met by
air-conditioned bus for a 1-2 hours visit to Tulum, then on to Coba. Be sure
to bring comfortable shoes, binoculars, bathing suit, towel, hat and sunscreen.
TULUM and XEL-HA LAGOON
Tulum is a smaller Maya complex, considered the most
beautiful of all the Maya sites, located on a cliff facing
the Caribbean Sea. The full day guided trip leaves in the
morning from the downtown pier with a ferry trip to the
mainland, then met by air-conditioned bus. Xel-Ha is a natural
aquarium lagoon where you can swim and snorkel. Bring your
own snorkel equipment and towel.
CHICHEN-ITZA
The most important civic and religious center of the
Maya is Chichen-Itza. It is located 200 miles from Cozumel
on the mainland. Tour is by 12-passenger plane landing on
archeological area. The tour runs only several days a week,
space is limited and fills up early. It is best to book
this tour before you arrive in Cozumel. Bring along comfortable
shoes, hat and camera. Please be advised that video cameras
will pay a fee of $10 US to be allowed in the park. The
use of tripods is discouraged. Tour includes all entrance
fees, round trip air and bilingual guide.
X-CARET - Natures Sacred Paradise
For a change of scenery, spend a day at this spectacular
natural park. Experience exotic flora and fauna. Enjoy a
mystical journey back in time while drifting through the
Underground River (45 minutes floating over 1,500 ft of
crystalline water.) A visit to the Archeological Museum,
Open Air Theatre and Maya Village completes this experience,
or you can just swim in a pool carved from rock and lie
on the beach to soak up the sun. There are four restaurants
onsite that serve Mexican cuisine and seafood. |
